Karl’s NYC Shoot-PART 2

March 27th, 2010 by HFL Staff

KARL LAGERFELD

Karl Lagerfeld breezed into town this week to shoot the fall Chanel campaign on the streets of downtown Manhattan. He had lunch with André Leon Talley at the Mercer, and shot his models on the streets of Soho and the Lower East Side.

In the latter neighborhood he put Abbey Lee Kershaw and Freja Beha on a fire escape and shot them from a crane lift, cherry-picking style.

The duo posed on the fire escape of one of the city’s brownstone buildings sporting highlights from next season’s faux-fur-lined, arctic themed collection.

McQueen

March 11th, 2010 by HFL Staff

Today, in a gilded salon in Paris, small groups of editors were invited to view the 16 pieces that Alexander McQueen had been working on before his death a few weeks ago. Artworks by Jean Fouquet, Sandro Boticelli, Stephan Lochner, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes and Hieronymus Bosch were captured digitally and transferred onto red, gold and silver dresses embellished with ornate embroideries. At this point, not much more can be said about the brilliance of McQueen’s work - consider, for example, a plumed dress for which each individual feather was painstakingly covered in gold leaf.  NYT.COM

Viktor & Rolf go to the DARK SIDE!

March 11th, 2010 by HFL Staff

Viktor & Rolf:  Fall/Winter 2011 - Espace Ephemere Tuileries Paris, France.

Often the simplest of ideas are the most effective in fashion, which was very much the case with the latest runway show, or work or performance art, by Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf. The action opened with veteran, and still skinny, model Kristen McMenamy appearing in ten layers of clothing, a five-foot wide silhouette, looking like she weighed 300 lbs and covered in a dramatic dark fox collar over a boucle wool coat. Next, the designers in black tuxedoes marched her out to a central, slowly turning disc in the middle of their impressive catwalk, composed of an ingenious new industrial print featuring zeppelins, pylons and factory chimneys. As each new model appeared the duo would take one layer off McMenamy, and put it on the newcomer.

Half way through the show, they reversed the process and began dressing the veteran, until she had resumed her monumental size by the end. The collection had the usual Viktor & Rolf preferences, huge triangular lapels, outlandish collars and oversized ruffles, and in a sense, was not terribly ground-breaking. But as a show, it was surely the most brilliantly executed either side of the Atlantic this season. The timing and execution throughout were flawless, in an exemplary display by the team of French show producer Alex de Betak. WWD.com

Galliano the French Romantic

March 6th, 2010 by HFL Staff

Dior

John Galliano’s fall 2010 collection was an evolution of his spring 2010 ridingwear-inspired couture collection. Today’s show was inspired by the second earl of Rochester, whom Johnny Depp played in the 2004 film The Libertine, and his many mistresses.

Again, Galliano put girls on the runway in long see-through dresses and other lingerie-inspired looks that many designers have given up this season.

With movie stars getting ready for Sunday’s Oscars, front rows in Paris are beginning to boast fewer celebrities. Indeed, Anna Wintour, who attended Dior this morning, but not Lanvin later, is thought to have left Paris already for the Oscars. Instead of entertainers, French finance minister Christine Lagarde and industry minister Christian Estrosi sat front-row at Dior along with Dior spokeswoman Charlize Theron.
