Band we’re feeling right now… DAS RACIST!

When Das Racist first hit the scene in 2008 with “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,” people weren’t sure whether they were joke rap or serious rap. Two years later, the rap group released a couple mixtapes that made some noise, and cleared up that question — joke rap and serious rap are not mutually exclusive.  (Dap, Heems and Kool A.D. of Das Racist perform at the 2011 Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, Washington)

Now they’re back, and with some kind of spastic, speed-like energy. Their new album, misleadingly, or jokingly, titled Relax, drops on Sept. 13, and in the meantime they’ve released “Michael Jackson,” which is available for purchase on iTunes.

From its opening chords, “Michael Jackson” makes its move aggressively with rapid, jerky beats and a loop that will drive you crazy — in a good way. Some key words to note here: “popper scooper,” “Oompa Loompa,” “Hakuna matata Pumpa,” “rap cats,” “Call me Janet Jackson,” and our favorite — “I’m a Daikon radish/See me next to sushi sexually.”

And of course, the refrain on MJ, which goes, “Michael Jackson. A million dollars. You feel me? Holla.” Yes, we’re definitely feeling you on this one.
