They All KISS De La Renta!

Oscar’s luncheon was “no joke” although Mayor Bloomberg did get a shot in politically saying the best thing about the Republican convention was the red Oscar dress donned by the aspiring first lady.  There were few youngsters there But no lack of extreme wealth, power and position!  And Doesn’t Sarah J look great!

As nearly 1,000 people gathered at the David Koch Theater on Wednesday afternoon for the annual Couture Council Award ceremonies — many of them wearing a de la Renta design they had pulled from their closet that morning — much of the talk was of Michelle Obama and the shimmering Tracy Reese dress she wore the night before to deliver her speech to the Democrats.

“She was amazing; she was gorgeous,” the designer Diane von Furstenberg said enthusiastically of the first lady.   The crowd — which included Sarah Jessica Parker, Iris Apfel, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and most of the top fashion editors in New York — was welcomed by Eleanora Kennedy, one of the board members of the Fashion Institute of Technology, which administers the award and which in past years has honored Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld and Dries Van Noten.

Mrs. Kennedy was wearing, as she pointed out, the same dress that Mrs. Romney had worn in Tampa, Fla., joking that it would be returned to the candidate’s wife at the end of the day.

After brief and surprisingly witty remarks from the mayor (“His clothes have been to more award shows than Meryl Streep.”), a slow-moving Mr. de la Renta took to the stage, looked around for a few seconds and said, “I am an extremely lucky man.”

He then thanked “all the women who have supported me over the years,” and singled out three who were seated at tables in front of him: Ms. von Furstenberg; Anna Wintour, of Vogue; and Bridget Foley, of Women’s Wear Daily, whom he said he admired “even when she gives my clothes a bad review.” – NY TIMES.COM
